Warrior Cats Sign in the Water Book 1 Chapter 4

Hi!!!!!! Sorry about the delay. I got a kidpub account so I have been posting on that..... Anyway! Here is Chapter 4!

Jemma backed away a little. Maybe she wasn’t ready for this.

“What are you doing here? Please tell me.” Ashpaw repeated.

“Er- I was looking for the clans.” Jemma replied absent mindedly.

“Oh. Well, you are in the right place then. I am from Lightningclan. What is your name?” he asked.

       “My name is Jemma.

       “Hi Jemma. I am Ashpaw.”

But, however, there was no hostility in the young cat’s eyes. Only curiosity. Suddenly Jemma was also curious. Just then, Bluepool and Cedarlight padded up to the two young cats.

“Who is this?” Bluepool asked.

“This is Jemma.” Ashpaw answered.

“Let’s take her to camp, after she explains herself.” Cedarlight suggested.

“I am from the Tallwalker gardens. I came here to seek refuge, because they have treated me very poorly. I want to live among your clan.” Jemma explained.

“Follow us then.” Bluepool meowed.

For some reason, Bluepool sounded troubled, but they padded off to the camp anyway.

As they entered the forest, Jemma breathed a sigh of relief. She felt sheltered under the woodland trees. They passed countless trees, bushes, and rocks, all of them smelling of the forest. Jemma knew that this would be a very good home for her.

Just then, Jemma scented lots of cats. The strong smell was almost overwhelming. She knew that they were near the camp.

“This is our camp entrance.” Ashpaw told her, as he guided her over to an opening in the thick undergrowth. As she squeezed through the entry. When she entered the camp, she was amazed.

In front of her was about twenty cats, all busy with things around the camp. When she entered, the cats’ heads all turned toward her almost immediately. Cedarlight led Ashpaw, Bluepool, and her toward a den that was behind a big tree.

When they arrived, he told Ashpaw, “Go with Bluepool and train. I will take care of Jemma.”

Ashpaw opened his mouth to protest, but thought the better of it, and he and Bluepool padded out of the camp again. Then Cedarlight turned to her.

“This is our leader’s den. He will decide what to do with you. Come now. Lightningstar is kind, and will not treat you harshly.” he said tenderly.

Jemma was relieved. She was glad that Lightningstar was kind, or else she could have a hard time earning her place in the clan.

As they entered the den, Cedarlight called out, “Lightningstar, my patrol found this cat at the border. We brought her to you.”

A sleek black tom emerged from the shadows.

“Welcome, little one. What is your name?” he asked.

“I am Jemma. I do not mean any harm.” Jemma replied nervously.

“Of course you don’t mean harm, Jemma.” Lightningstar meowed soothingly.

Jemma was amazed at his kindness. She had never been treated with such respect.

“She says that she wishes to join Lightningclan.” Cedarlight explained to the leader.

“Is this true?” Lightningstar asked her.

“It is.”

“Very well. I will talk it over with Squirrelfur, my loyal deputy, and see what she thinks.”

Jemma was overjoyed, filled with such a blissful feeling that she did not know how she would bear it. Lightningstar signaled Cedarlight to leave with a flick of his tail, and Jemma followed him out of the den. If the deputy agreed, she would be a clan cat!

The next few minutes seemed like hours, but finally, Lightningstar called her into his den. Squirrelfur was with him.

“We have decided that you may stay, if you can learn the clan ways and obey them.” the black leader meowed.

“Thank you! Thank you! You will not regret this! How do we begin?” Jemma yowled in triumph.

“We begin like this.” replied LIghtningstar, and with a flick of his tail, he padded out of the den, with Squirrelfur behind him. Jemma followed eagerly.

The leader climbed or the tall tree that was in front of his den, and yowled, “Let all cats gather here beneath Talltree for a clan meeting!”

Then, before her very eyes, gathered a great multitude of cats, all curiously looking up at the leader.

Lightningstar motioned Jemma to join him, and when she had climbed up to him, he spoke again to the clan.

“This is Jemma. She is a kittypet, but was mistreated in her life with the Tallwalkers. She has decided to join the clan, and Squirrelfur and I have decided to let her into Lightningclan as an apprentice.”

Then he turned to Jemma.

“Jemma, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you have received your warrior name, you will be known as Ripplepaw. Your mentor will be Talonshine. I hope Talonshine will pass down all he knows to you.”

Then he turned to Talonshine.

“Talonshine, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training, and have shown yourself to be fierce and brave. You will be the mentor of Ripplepaw, and I expect you to pass on all you have learned to her.” he meowed confidently.

The brown and red tabby looked surprised, but he waited below the tree until his apprentice came to  him.

When she did, some of the clan started yowling, “Ripplepaw! Ripplepaw! Ripplepaw!”

Now she was a full member of the clan. A new name, an new mentor, a new friend, a new home. Ripplepaw was filled with such a jovial feeling that she thought she would burst. This was her new life, and she knew that she was going to be happy here. Just then, Ashpaw padded up to her.

“Nice name, Ripplepaw!” he said in congratulations.

“Thanks!” she meowed cheerfully.

Then Talonshine came up to her.

“Let me show you around the camp.” he said.

“See you later!” said Ashpaw, and than walked away.

As Ripplepaw and Talonshine walked around the camp, the new apprentice was baffled on how large it was. There were kits, queens, warriors, apprentices, elders, and even a medicine cat.

When the tour was over, her mentor showed her to the apprentices’ den.

“This is where you will sleep.” he said.

Ashpaw was already there waiting for her. When Talonshine walked away, he meowed,

“How was the tour?”

Ripplepaw was exhausted, but told him all about everything that had happened.

Ashpaw showed her to a nest.

“This will be yours. It is next to mine.” her friend meowed.

“Thank you. I am bone-tired.” she said appreciatively.

Ripplepaw sank into her nest. It was soft and cozy.

“Good night.” Ashpaw meowed quietly, and then she plummeted into darkness.

She awoke in a forest, so she looked around. There were many things to see. There were bees, flowers, bushes, but the best things were the trees. She climbed up one of them, and had a feeling of perfect sensation and freedom. Then, she remembered that she did not know how to get down.

She felt her paws slip, and she searched franticly for a hold. Fear replaced the freedom as she fell closer and closer to the ground. She braced herself for pain, and then she hit. But there was no pain. Only a warm, tingly feeling, that made her feel as if she could run forever. It had all happened so fast, but as soon as that special feeling had come, it was gone.

Ripplepaw woke up. She had been awakened by Lightningstar’s loud call. A call for a clan meeting.

She did not feel as if she had enough strength, but the feeling in her dream came back, and she found that her strength was renewed.

She padded out of the den, and joined with the clan under Talltree. Then she saw Ashpaw.  He was sitting beside Lightningstar, looking proud and brave. As soon as the clan had quieted, the leader spoke.

“I am proud to say that this morning we will hold a naming ceremony for Ashpaw.” Lightningstar said.

Then he turned to Bluepool. “Is your apprentice fit to become a warrior?” he asked.

“He is.” Bluepool replied.

“Then he will be named.” he said, turning to Ashpaw, who was shivering with excitement. “I, Lightningstar, leader of Lightningclan, call apon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your oble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Ashpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend this clan, even at the cost of your life?”

“I do.” Ashpaw replied boldly.

“Them by the powers of Starclan, I give you your warrior name: Ashpaw,  from this moment on you will be known as Ashear. Starclan honors your bravery and courage, and we welcome you as a full warrior of Lightningclan.” the leader meowed.

The newly named Ashear jumped down from the tree, and the whole clan called out,

“Ashear! Ashear! Ashear!”

Ripplepaw joined in for a bit, but then realized that she yould not be sleeping with Ashear tonight. He was a warrior now, so he would be sleeping in the warrior’s den. She was only a new apprentice. It would be a long time before she was able to be with him.

She sadly walked off to her den. Ashear would never be with her there again.

  1. I really enjoyed this chapter. I especially appreciated having paragraph separation so that each new speaker had his own paragraph. I do get the feeling that Ripplepaw has feelings that will play a part in future chapters.
